Arborists to donate care for two iconic red oak trees in Lewes
For years, two iconic red oak trees in front of the Lewes Elementary School building have grabbed the attention of passersby on Savannah Road.
To ensure their continued well-being and longevity, Cypress Tree Care is partnering with Arborjet | Ecologel to adopt the trees and provide their arboricultural care and plant healthcare.
These historic trees have graced the school property since its original establishment in 1921, providing shade, beauty and important environmental benefits to generations of students and the surrounding community. Preserving and nurturing these trees will allow future generations of students, staff, residents and visitors to continue to enjoy their benefits.
Beginning in the spring, James Ashby II, director of operations for Cypress Tree Care, will be working with Trent Dicks, national sales manager for Arborjet | Ecologel, to provide plant healthcare and soil improvement treatments. The trees will also receive pruning and fertilization treatments, improving their overall health for the continued benefit of the community.
The project provides local arborists and tree lovers an opportunity to learn about preservation through tree injection treatments. Research shows that environmentally sound trunk injections not only help save trees, but are far more cost-effective than removal and replacement. Saving mature trees also helps to reduce CO2 production, energy costs, and stormwater runoff.
Arborjet | Ecologel will donate the treatment as part of its Saving America's Iconic Trees initiative, which aims to ensure the health and longevity of the country's most beloved trees that live at public schools, parks, gardens and other historic sites. Designed to protect against invasive insects and disease, and bolster overall tree health, treatment will help maintain the trees' historic status for years to come. Cypress Tree Care will donate the labor and equipment for tree care.
Beyond the Iconic Trees program, Arborjet | Ecologel provides numerous educational opportunities by funding university research and student scholarships in arboriculture, horticulture, entomology and environmental science. The company has been helping mitigate the devastation of invasive species, saving trees in more than 150 municipalities across the country.
