Area Girl Scouts return from European adventure

September 1, 2022

Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay Council's Older Girl International Travel Group members recently returned from a 15-day summer adventure in Europe.

The girls traveled in late June and early July to London; Paris; Adelboden and Lucerne, Switzerland; and Florence and Rome, Italy. The group consisted of girls ages 14-17 who have been planning this trip for the last four years. It was originally conceived as a 2021 trip, so the girls had an extra year of money-earning activities that allowed them to add on some special events to their tour.

While in London, the girls toured the city, took a ride on the London Eye, saw the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace and enjoyed a Thames River cruise. They also were able to tour Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and see a performance of “Much Ado About Nothing."

In Paris, the group toured the Louvre Museum, explored the artists’ neighborhood of Montmartre, and of course went up to the top floor of the Eiffel Tower.

In Florence, the girls enjoyed shopping the leather markets and had a fresco-making class. The adventure ended in Rome with visits to the Colosseum, St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums. For their final dinner in Rome, they prepared pasta and tiramisu during a cooking class.

The group visited two World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts centers in London and Adelboden, and enjoyed special pinning ceremonies.

The girls had four years to raise funds for the trip, and their money-earning activities included catering special Girl Scout events, flamingo flocking, and of course, cookie sales. The girls represented all parts of the Chesapeake Bay Council, with participants from all three counties of Delaware and from Maryland.

Chaperones on this trip were Janet Maher and Anna Moshier, both of Lewes.

The group’s next adventure will be in June 2023 when they travel to Italy and Greece.
