Army Reserve in Lewes assists with American Legion parade float

December 31, 2019

The Cape Henlopen Army Reserve Unit 946 Transportation Company in Lewes spent time with the American Legion Post 17 family Dec. 7-8.

With food donated by the community for the traditional occasion, post auxiliary members served the soldiers lunch Saturday. Auxiliary historian Nancy Bush made an appearance  as Olaf, delivering a holiday stocking to each soldier.

A dozen Unit 946 members helped assemble the post’s Lewes Christmas Parade float and escorted it during the procession. Their uniformed presence brought great attention to the float and the troop banners on it.

Featured in the parade were the same banners that the American Legion displayed last summer along Savannah Road and Cape Henlopen Drive, showcasing actual photos of hometown heroes who served the country. It was a pleasure for participants to see an entire community honoring both the current troops and the veterans of the past by clapping, shaking hands and saying, “Thanks for serving.” The experience was a great morale booster for these young soldiers.

The float won third place in the Community Float Category, which successfully ends the post’s year of honoring the 100th anniversaries of the American Legion and its Auxiliary as military service organizations.

The next day, the same soldiers helped out at Post 17 to disassemble the float and put everything away in the pavilion for the winter.
