The Award Winners XIX Exhibition, a group show featuring the 2019 Delaware Division of the Arts Individual Artist Fellows, will run Saturday, Aug. 3 to Sunday, Sept. 1, at the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center, 37 Baltimore Ave., Rehoboth Beach.
An opening reception to celebrate these artists’ talents is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 3. Attendees can experience art, and enjoy refreshments and performances by the award-winning artists.
This select group represents a variety of art forms – musicians, sculptors, painters, photographers and more. This year, work samples from 136 Delaware artists were reviewed by out-of-state arts professionals considering demonstrated creativity and skill in their art form, and 20 artists were selected for fellowships. The work has been on display at the Biggs Museum of American Art, and the museum is partnering with CAMP Rehoboth to bring this exhibition to the coastal community.
As an environmentalist, Lewes artist G.W. Thompson said, “I have always wanted my work to convey a sense of activism. Many of my images deal with environmental issues that are either overt or hidden.”
Whether Susan Benarcik is using word, image, organic materials or design techniques, she said, “Nature is my rubric and my compass, my metaphor and material.”
Artist Matthew Glick said, “The realization that art is actually one very common language has allowed my creative processes to flourish.”
Photographer Shannon Woodloe was preordained for photography. “There hasn’t been a time in my life in which I did not own a camera,” she said.
Shawn Faust is an incurable optimist. “I paint to live and I live to paint. My favorite color is blue,” he said.
Jeweler and crafter Kaitlyn Evans of Lewes said she recognizes the importance of pushing aside fear and taking risks in developing new work that branches beyond the soft, quiet and hidden.
A short program at the reception will include a reading by Master Fellow in Literature Billie Travalini, a performance by award-winning musician Shelley Kelley, and comments on art and environmental activism from G.W. Thompson.
