Art group seeks Delaware railroad reminiscences by March 15

March 2, 2024

Art in Bloom, a committee of Lewes in Bloom, is seeking individuals who have memories of riding railroad trains in Delaware in the 1900s.

Respondents’ unique recollections may be used in the development of artwork placed on the new Lewes Junction Railroad Station at Lewes Public Library.

“Whether you are a child of someone who rode the rails and conveyed their experience to you, or you are in possession of letters or postcards describing a journey, or you were a frequent commuter, a passenger on a memorable ride, or a railroad worker with a great story, we want to hear from you,” said Sue Sandmeyer, Art in Bloom co-chair.

“We are seeking your personal (or handed down) anecdotes/photos/postcards about train journeys in Delaware; details about the sights, sounds and experiences during travel; encounters, friendships or events that occurred on the train; and what you know about the boom that Lewes experienced when the railroad came to town,” she said.

Recollection submissions are due by Friday, March 15, and can be emailed to artinbloomlewesde@gmail.com. To request a personal interview, send a name, contact information, and a brief description of the experiences or correspondence to artinbloomlewesde@gmail.com.

“We need your name, email address and a description of your contribution. Your contributions may be acknowledged in the final artwork unless you prefer to remain anonymous. By sharing your memories, you become an integral part of preserving Lewes’ railroad history and creating artwork that commemorates the incredible legacy of the Delaware rail system,” said Sandmeyer.

For more information or to schedule a personal interview, contact Sue Sandmeyer at mssandmeyer@gmail.com.
