Athletes of the Week Aug. 9
Evan Chubb
Don't let her size and age fool you – this rising third-grader at H.O.B. Elementary School can mix it up on the field hockey turf with the big girls, as she proved last week at the the University of Delaware field hockey team clinic at Champions Stadium. "Evan definitely holds her own," said Blue Hens team member and Cape alum Noelle Sabbagh. "She is one of the most enthusiastic and hardworking younger athletes I’ve coached. She is always ready to step into a drill and give it her all, and she isn’t afraid to try new skills and push herself to the level of other athletes around her. She is tiny but mighty and a joy to coach. I am very excited to see her development as a field hockey player.” Evan plays for the Oranje and Delaware Shore field hockey travel squads, and she is equally talented playing for the Atlantic Lacrosse and Coastal Lacrosse teams.
Zane Coulbourne
Zane is a 17-year-old rising senior on the Cape football team, a football legacy wearing the same No. 44 as his late father, Robb. A Class of ’94 grad, Robb played for coaches George Glenn and Brain Donahue. Current coach Mike Frederick had words of high praise when asked about Zane: “He is fast and physical, and dedicated to transforming himself in the weight room this off-season. Zane is going from 175 pounds to 205 pounds while getting faster. He was a reserve LB and special teams player last year while backing up a senior-heavy linebacker core. We expect him to elevate into one of the starting linebacker positions. Zane has the ability to be an impact player. It will all depend on how quickly he can gain the one thing he is missing – experience.” Impact on contact may be the storyline this senior season for Zane, a great kid and teammate.
Tyrone Handy
This rising junior on the Cape football team has been in the Cape district since second grade. Ty’s dad Tyrone Handy was a star running back at Delmar. Coach Mike Frederick: “Ty Handy had an amazing spring, and our staff is convinced he will break out this season. He gained valuable experience playing varsity, substituting for our outside linebacker positions. He is smart – both football and classroom smart. He is athletic and will deliver a hit whenever able. He is also a talented running back and will provide much-needed depth on the offensive side of the ball. He is all business, avoids and separates from the distractions, and works tirelessly to improve. He has emerged as a leader on defense alongside Dell Richards. This is the type of young man that inspires us as a staff to do all that we can to help the team succeed. I seriously can’t wait to see what he will do at Legends and across the state this fall.”
Bailey Noel
Captain of the Delaware State Parks Beach Patrol, Bailey helped power his team to victory twice in July. At the USLA Mid-Atlantic Regionals at Tower Beach July 10, the 2005 Sussex Tech graduate topped all men in the open division, helping his team take first in that competition. A couple of weeks later, Noel and his team of guards won gold at the Lifeguard Olympics for the second year in a row. Lifeguarding since 2007, Bailey has made countless rescues. It is his second summer with DSPBP after working for Sea Colony, North Bethany and Fenwick Island patrols previously. His victory at the July 10 event marked the first in his career. He said when he competes, he lives in the moment, giving his all while enjoying the opportunities he says God has provided for him. As the DSPBP leader, he said his focus is on the entire patrol, and it felt amazing to see his guards rewarded for their hard work and dedication to the craft.
