Athletes of the Week July 19

July 19, 2024
Jack Bain
A rising freshman at Cape Henlopen High School, this honor roll student led the Lewes Yacht Club/Sussex Family YMCA swim team to a 485-127 victory over the Rehoboth Beach Country Club squad this week. Jack earned wins in the 100 individual medley and the 50 backstroke. He also swam to second for the 50 free in a blazing 25 seconds. Jack was a state finalist this winter season as an eighth-grader at Sussex Academy in the grueling 500 freestyle. He also swims for Sussex Family YMCA during the winter season, when he was a district champion in the 200 fly. Last summer, he was the summer league champ in the 50 back. "Jack is primed to have another great Delmarva Swim Association summer championships meet next week," said coach Mike Vansant. "He's a great swimmer and a great kid."
Evan Burris

This Lewes native and rising Cape Henlopen High School senior won the 2024 Dewey Beach Patrol USLA certification test and was named Rookie of the Year July 16. Burris is an accomplished student-athlete, having competed in three years of varsity soccer and lacrosse for Vikings. He has helped Cape’s lacrosse team reach the DIAA championship the past three years. Burris and Cape’s soccer team also reached the championship this past season. He took his talents to the Dewey Beach Patrol for the 2024 summer season. During the rookie test, July 15-16, he placed third in the half-mile run and 220-yard sprint. He placed second in the run-swim-run, one-mile swim, push-ups and 50-yard swim. Burris took first place in the line charges, buoy charges and 82-foot stand pull.

Lucca Fazio
This rising sixth-grader at Fred Thomas Middle School is having a powerful District 3 tournament showing for the Lewes major all-stars. Through three games, he is batting .400. He had a homer, a double and three RBIs in the 3-2 win over a tough Milton team to open the tournament. He has also pitched five innings and struck out eight players against Georgetown. "Lucca is a fine young man and baseball player," said Lewes manager Jerry Windish. "He is very coachable and lives for baseball. Lucca is a great teammate and is trusted as the big bat in the Lewes lineup. He had a big-time pitching performance this week against a good Georgetown team." Lucca prides himself on having a good curveball. When not on the diamond, you can find him playing basketball or going to the beach.
Chase Madden

Chase has been a spark plug for the Milton major all-stars during their District 3 tournament run. After walking to begin the July 14 game against Millsboro, Chase came all the way around to score and start the party in the 13-4 win. He followed that with a lead-off triple and scored the next at-bat to set the tone in Milton's 5-1 victory over Lower Sussex July 15. The Mariner rising seventh-grader led the team with three hits in the win. Against Nanticoke July 16, Chase started on the mound and struck out eight, surrendering just one hit. He fired 5.1 innings in the 2-0 victory. Chase chipped in with a single in the 9-0 victory over Georgetown July 17 that clinched a spot in the District 3 title game against Lewes. Chase plays travel ball for the Bagel Bombers, and his favorite team is the Phillies.
