Athletes of the Week Nov. 4

November 4, 2022
Ozmeer "Oz" Daisey

An eighth-grade football player at Beacon Middle School, this two-way athlete lit up the turf of Legends Stadium in the district rival game with Mariner Middle this week when he rushed three times for 66 yards and two touchdowns. Not to be outdone on the other side of the ball, he made five solo tackles and assisted on three more, recording three sacks, forcing a fumble and recovering another. He recently was voted the team’s 2022 Outstanding Defensive Lineman and 2022 Most Valuable Defensive Player. "Oz is an outstanding young man, excellent leader and teammate," said Beacon coach John Parker. "He is always willing to help others and has a great work ethic. He asks questions in the classroom and on the field to improve himself as a student and an athlete." Oz also plays basketball and participates in track and field.

Katya Geyer

A 14-year-old freshman at Sussex Academy who lives in Rehoboth, Katya was the Seahawks’ No. 1 cross country runner at the Sussex County Championships, leading her school to the team title Oct. 26 at Sussex Tech. Sussex Academy placed five runners in the top 10. “I like cross country because it’s an individual sport with a team score. It is just so much fun,” Katya said. At the 32nd annual Sea Witch 5K in Rehoboth Oct. 30, Katya was the first female and seventh overall, finishing in a time of 20:25. Amazingly, in a field of 360 runners, there were seven teenagers in the top 20. On Saturday, Nov. 5, Katya will lead her team into the Henlopen Conference Championships at Killens Pond State Park at 2 p.m. This flock of Seahawks with Katya running point has a good chance to bring home the program's first Henlopen Conference Championship.

Cara Scheibling

A 35-year-old by way of Moorestown, N.J., Cara won the Sea Witch Half Marathon Oct. 29 at Cape Henlopen State Park in a time of 1:26:36, which is a 6:37 mile pace for 13 miles. Masters runner Mike Sewell placed second two minutes behind in 1:28:30. Mike agreed Cara was a better story as she looked cool and composed – not even tired – and smiled at everyone along the way who encouraged her. Cara is a graduate of Drew University. She then secured an MBA at the University of Tennessee. “I’m actually training for a full marathon and hoping to run about 2:55,” Cara said. “I cross train and do a lot of biking, so my legs are bigger than your classic distance runner body type.” Cara then retrieved her black lab traveling companion to complete the black lab/blonde girl distance runner combo. Cara was rewarded with a Half Stockley-designed, one-of-a-kind plaque before heading back to the N.J. Turnpike.

Austin Tyndall

An eighth-grader at Mariner Middle School, Austin led the Vikings to a 2-1 victory over district rival Beacon Nov. 1, scoring both goals at Cape Henlopen's Legends Stadium. He has scored 14 goals for Mariner this season. "He doesn't like to admit it, but he is a leader for us on and off the field," said Mariner coach Collin Brady. "He's strong on the ball and understands what I expect with the boys. He understands where they need to be and helps correct them on the field. He is an absolute leader." An Academic Challenge student at Mariner, he is involved with the junior honor society, Business Professionals of America and AVID. He hopes to play basketball this winter, then return to his defensive position on the Mariner lacrosse team in the spring. In his spare time, he enjoys fishing and swimming. He also likes to referee soccer at Sandhill Fields.
