Author Joanne Guilfoil documents Naval Academy traditions

June 30, 2019

Local author Joanne K. Guilfoil recently published “The United States Naval Academy A-Z,” so readers can celebrate the 1,200 young men and women who are planning to endure the challenges of Plebe Summer 2019 (basic midshipmen training) at the U.S.Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

Induction Day was June 27, heralding six weeks of learning basic skills in seamanship, navigation, damage control, sailing and handling yard patrol craft. Plebes (incoming freshmen, fourth class) also learn infantry drill and how to shoot 9mm pistols and M-16 rifles during the summer, before the upperclassmen return for the fall semester.

This spring, Guilfoil donated 200 copies to the Naval Academy Business Services Division to be given to visitors and special guests this summer. They include thousands of academy campers: STEM students and young athletes who enjoy life on the yard and in Bancroft Hall along with their classes and sports activities. Copies were deposited at the USNA warehouse the day of the Herndon Climb, May 20, during Commissioning Week.

Vice Admiral Walter E. “Ted” Carter Jr., academy superintendent, and his wife attended the event. Before retiring to their quarters for an evening event with Firsties (seniors), the Carters met Guilfoil, and she presented them with their own book copy. Commissioning Week, June 17-24, ended with the Class of 2019 Graduation at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, then a Graduation Fly-Over by the Blue Angels.

These and other USNA events, Navy history, traditions and culture can be found in this uniquely compact book.
