The second annual Darby Dash 5K held Oct. 15 at Cape Henlopen State Park was a small race in honor of a large dog. Seventy runners and several dogs pawed and crawled around the course. A hundred doughnuts were brought by Lori Yanacek, who represented a team of three people and four dogs.
Bryan Mack, 32, a repeat winner in a two-year race, cruised to victory in 19:01. He was followed by Andy Gorlich, 37, in 19:43. Mike Sewell, 53, was masters winner in 19:56.
Beau Croll, 35, pushing Baby Axel in a buggy, was fourth in 21:57. Beau’s dog Fat Frank stayed home on the couch, as 21:57 is beyond Frank’s pace.
Susan Dunn, 45, was the overall women’s winner in 22:42. JoAnn Senft, 52, won the women’s masters race in 24:04.
Quade Cummings, 12, ran 23:36, while Brady Quillen, 10, running with his grandfather Alan, ran 29:25.
Fourteen runners in the field of 70 were over 50 years old. The top 27 runners broke the 30-minute mark.
Custom plaques for overall and masters winners were designed and produced by Half Stockley, a local artist who, back in the day, built the first upside-down house on Park Avenue in Lewes.
