An event Sussex Consortium Principal Vivian Bush said was a long time in the making finally came to fruition May 2, when Bad Hair Day? officially opened at the school for special-needs students.

“Drexel is the perfect partner to have,” Bush said of Bad Hair Day? owner Drexel Davison. “He gives so much back to the community.”

Davison, who spent most of the salon’s first operating hour trimming the hair of local and school officials, talked with students about his plans for the new business.

“We’re really here for you guys, right?” Drexel asked students as they each shook his hand.

“Yep!” replied student employees Charlotte Maxwell, Rhianna Powell and Dallanara Garcia in chorus.

Sussex Consortium Vocational Coordinator Pamela Graves said the school has partnered with Bad Hair Day? for the last 16 years, allowing students with disabilities to become self-sufficient employees through the work program.

Now, the salon has come to a retail space in the Sussex Consortium, where students will assist Bad Hair Day? stylists by doing laundry, sweeping floors, restocking shelves and doing whatever else is needed to keep the salon running smoothly, Graves said.

Davison said his salon’s newest location is a quiet, intimate space that is easily accessible and has parking right outside the front door. Davison said 10% from the sale of all Aveda products will be donated to the school.

Bountiful Bowls plans to open in an additional vocational space next door, Davison said.

The Sussex Consortium serves students ages 3 to 21 and is an option to all Sussex County students with an educational classification of autism.

Bad Hair Day? at the Sussex Consortium is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Walk-ins are welcome; call 302-227-HAIR to make an appointment and specify the Consortium location.
