Bayhealth opens new cath lab

April 23, 2024

Bayhealth Hospital Kent Campus recently announced the opening of its new catheterization lab, equipped with cutting-edge technology and advanced imaging capabilities.

This state-of-the-art facility is a hybrid operating room, allowing for minimally invasive procedures that were previously only performed in the operating room.

“The new cath lab represents a significant advancement in patient care, as it offers high-powered imaging that enhances efficiency and reduces complications,” said Roberto Scaffidi, MD, Bayhealth interventional cardiologist, and cath and electrophysiology lab medical director.

With this innovative technology, procedures such as heart catheterizations, peripheral interventions, Watchman, transcarotid artery revascularization, transcatheter aortic valve replacement, endovascular aneurysm repair and electrophysiology procedures can be performed with greater precision and accuracy.

One of the key features of the new lab is its bi-plane imaging system, which enables imaging from two different planes with just one injection. This not only reduces the use of contrast, minimizing the risk of kidney injury, but also provides high-definition pictures even when magnified to the smallest of vessels. As a result, case time and fluoroscopy time are decreased, while patient safety is significantly increased.

In addition to its impact on patient care, the new cath lab also has the potential to expand Bayhealth's stroke program and enhance the recruitment of its neuroscience program.

Bayhealth is committed to providing exceptional healthcare services to the community. With its state-of-the-art technology and expanded capabilities, the hospital is poised to deliver even better outcomes for its patients.
