Bayhealth to welcome fellows in hematology and medical oncology
Bayhealth held a Match Day celebration Dec. 1 for the first class of fellows in its new hematology and medical oncology fellowship program.
With the launch of this fellowship program, the first of its kind in Delaware, two talented fellows will join Bayhealth in July to complete specialized training with hematologists and medical oncologists at the Bayhealth Cancer Centers on the Kent and Sussex campuses. A medical fellow is a physician who has finished residency and gains advanced training under experts in a specific subspecialty of medicine.
In 2020, Bayhealth became the first teaching hospital in central and southern Delaware, and it has continued to expand on its graduate medical education programs ever since. These GME programs enable physicians to hone their specialty expertise while providing patient care that benefits local communities. Because Bayhealth’s hematology and medical oncology fellows will care for patients alongside seasoned specialists as part of their training, this program is expanding access to the highest-quality, research-based cancer care for Delawareans.
“We are proud to educate the next generation of physicians to deliver the best cancer care in our country and region,” said Iftekhar Khan, MD, Bayhealth hematology and medical oncology fellowship program director. “This fellowship program is another milestone in our ability to apply knowledge of the latest clinical research in cancers and blood diseases to provide state-of-the-art prevention and treatment to our community members.”
Bayhealth welcomes Hyeon Jeong “H.J.” Park, DO, and Sumukh Arun Kumar, MD, the two fellows joining its hematology and medical oncology fellowship program.
Park studied at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is completing an internal medicine residency at ChristianaCare in Newark. Kumar attended Bangalore Medical College and is completing a residency at Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester, Mass.
