The Beacon and Mariner field hockey game at Cape’s Champions Stadium Nov. 2 was a nail biter, nip and tuck, see-saw, barn burner, a highlight film. You can pick any cliche you want, but the Vikings versus Vikings hockey matchup was anything but dull.
The Beacon squad’s Riley Klopp put in the lone goal at 13:52 on a fast-and-furious play in front of Mariner goalie Elie Cerchio, who stopped eight Beacon attempts. Beacon’s Julie Heffernan made nine saves in the contest.
“It was so exciting,” said Beacon coach Dom Scott in her first year as head coach. “The girls came out with a lot of intensity and that continued through out the game. They really supported each other. They were pushing each other the whole game and that’s the reason we won – everyone’s effort during the game.”
“I’m very pleased with the way we played,” said Mariner coach Cindy Brown. “Our girls worked very hard all season. It’s a shame one team had to lose the game because it was such a great effort by both teams.”
Beacon Middle ends their season at 6-0-3, while the Mariner Vikings finish at 10-1.
The Cape Henlopen field hockey legacy will continue.
