“Welcome to my house, we don’t have to go out!” Monday night at Champions Stadium, sister schools Beacon and Mariner closed out the hockey season in front of the joint ownership of a full house.
Beacon, coached by Lynn Richardson and Danielle Smith, was a slight favorite over Mariner, coached by Hannah Pepper and Lexi Gooch.
Beacon scored in the first quarter when Atia Sabbagh converted a penalty stroke, going high and to the left of Mariner goalie Lelia Hughes.
The penalty was a result of a Mariner defender in behind her own goalie who blocked a shot with her body instead of the stick.
The game stayed tight until late in the fourth quarter, when Allaire Burton sent home the game-clincher for a 2-0 Beacon victory.
Beacon completed the season undefeated 9-0-1, while Mariner closed out 6-2-1.
Beacon graduates 14 eighth-graders, while Mariner graduates five eighth-graders.
“There is a lot of talent in our middle schools in all the grades,” said Cape high school coach Kate Austin, who was there along with her team watching the game.
