The Beacon Middle cross country girls’ team faced Milford Central at Cape High Nov. 6, and Beacon had little trouble topping the Bucs 15-40. Emily Hilton continued her fine season by winning the girls’ title in 12:25.3. Addison Farrell was second in 13:20.6, while MacKenzie Kupa grabbed third in 14:18.8. Fourth place went to Simran Van Scoyoc in 15:40.6, while Samantha Michnya was fifth in 15:45.4. Emma Rowley was 11th in 19:04.4. Flora Hippolyte was 12th for Beacon in 19:09.9. Delaney Weissberg led the Milford girls with a time of 16:18.6.
Beacon’s Brandt Kuklish won the boys’ race in 12:25.1 to lead his team to a 22-35 win over the Bucs, while Conor Greenly ran 12:54.2 for second to lead his Milford team. Jack Willmot of Beacon was third in 12:58.3, while teammate Elijah Cain ran 13:01.4 to take fourth. Rounding out the top five was Barrett Valentine of Milford in a time of 13:06.5.
The meet was the final competition for both teams.
Mariner Middle finished up its cross country season with wins over Selbyville Middle, as the boys earned a 15-50 sweep and the girls won 24-31.
The Mariner boys took the top eight spots, led by Dylan Harp with a chill race of 11:29. Caleb Olmsted was second in 12:15, and Andrew Ockels was third in 12:12:21. Beau Garratt led Selbyville in ninth place with a time of 13:04.
The girls’ meet was much closer, as Selbyville held a one-point lead entering the track with Mariner’s Addie Dean and Kylie Carmean trailing a pack of Selbyville runners. Dean ran a great final 300 meters to break up the pack and finish ninth, while Carmean was 11th to make the difference in the meet and propel Mariner to the win. Up front, it was well-known Bree Terhune of Mariner with the win in 12:10, followed by teammate Stella Hastings in 12:51. Selbyville grabbed the next two positions with Athena Fleming-Lloyd finishing third in 13:02 and Hayley Britt taking fourth in 13:07.
Horseshoe Hustle
The second annual Horseshoe Hustle changes this year from a 5K to a five-miler starting at 9 a.m., Sunday, Nov. 10, at the beautiful Fresh Pond Trail in Delaware Seashore State Park north of Bethany Beach. Last year’s event, organized by Mark Carter of the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays, saw 167 5K finishers and 337 total participants, while this year we are expecting more than 300 as well. The race will be presented by Bethany Brewing Co. The first half-mile and the final half-mile are on pavement, while the middle miles are run on off-road surfaces or grass and trails. Enjoy nature at its finest! Pick up your packet early from 4 to 6 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 9, at Bethany Brewing Co. off Hickman Road, or pick it up race morning from 8 to 8:45 a.m.
Nicola Pizza
Another second annual race will be held Saturday, Nov. 9, as the popular Nicola Pizza 5K Run/Walk will be held at the restaurant outside Lewes. The race will loop the Villages of Five Points development with an out-and-back course on the bike trail. There will be separate start and finish lines, with the start on the south side of Savannah Road and the finish on the north side. The race will benefit the Warrior Weekend program. Early packet pickup will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, Nov. 8, when you can pick up your bib and T-shirt and stay for dinner. Don’t forget the kids’ dash, called the Nic-o-Boli Dash, will take place just before the race start.
Finish line
Dylan Harp and Bree Terhune of Mariner Middle School will compete in the Middle School National Cross Country Championships in Kentucky at Tom Sawyer Park this weekend. A group of Cape runners will compete in the NXN Southeast Regionals Saturday, Nov. 23, in Cary, N.C. A small group of Seashore Striders runners will head to the Coaches Cross Country Nationals in Lexington, Ky., also Nov. 23. The Cape Henlopen High School cross country team will go into the Division I state championships looking to knock off powerhouse Sallies, and I am hearing that a few of Sallies’ top guns are out with injury. Sussex Academy girls will compete in Division II and hope to be able to hang with the upstate private power. Good luck to all runners at the Delaware State Championships.
