Beebe nursing students honored with scholarships

April 30, 2025

Each year, a number of students pursuing their education at the Margaret H. Rollins School of Nursing at Beebe Healthcare are named recipients of a series of spring scholarships. Collectively, these awards promote the profession of nursing while offering financial support for the next generation of nursing professionals who will ultimately provide care for patients in the years to come.

The Margaret H. Rollins School of Nursing Scholarships are presented based on nominations from the School of Nursing and are awarded to nursing students who reside in Sussex or Kent counties. They also have made a commitment to work full time for Beebe Healthcare for a minimum of 18 months following graduation and completion of their licensure exam. This year’s winners are Nicholas Vitella, Amanda Benson and Jada Sales-Morales, senior student scholarship recipients; and Morgan Taylor and Riley Taylor, first-year student scholarship recipients.

The Beebe Medical Staff Scholars Program Scholarships are awarded by Beebe Healthcare’s medical staff in support of nursing education and to recognize nursing students whose intention is to work in Sussex County upon graduation. Recipients have demonstrated exceptional clinical performance in nursing, in accordance with criteria established by the Student Services Committee of the School of Nursing. Winners are Amanda Benson, Hannah Collins and Chloe Sylvester, senior student scholarship recipients.

The Edna W. Wyatt Scholarship, presented through an endowment created by G. Edward Wyatt and his wife in memory of Wyatt’s mother, a 1930 School of Nursing alumna, is presented to a second-semester first-year student or a senior student who has demonstrated academic excellence as well as a need for tuition assistance. This year’s winner is Jada Sales-Morales.

The Village Improvement Association’s Mildred Gray Scholarship is presented to an enrolled School of Nursing student who resides in Sussex County, maintains a B average or higher in nursing courses, and has demonstrated financial need. The award is offered by the Village Improvement Association of Rehoboth Beach. This year’s recipient is Riley Taylor.

The Louise Jarmon Hopkinson Scholarships are presented to first year and senior-year nursing students in recognition of their academic performance. They honor the legacy of Louise Jarmon Hopkinson, a 1932 Beebe School of Nursing graduate who worked at Beebe for many years and also served as an Army nurse. This year’s winners are Chloe Sylvester, senior student scholarship recipient, and Noelle Benson, first-year student scholarship recipient.

The Dr. Mansour Saberi Scholarships is awarded to School of Nursing students in good standing who reside in Sussex County and plan to seek employment at Beebe following graduation. The award is presented in memory of Dr. Mansour Saberi, a board-certified internal medicine physician who specialized in endocrinology and treatment of metabolism disorders and chaired the Beebe Department of Medicine for 30 years. This year’s winner is Nicholas Vitella, senior student scholarship recipient.

The Dr. Carl G. Pierce Scholarship is presented to students who have a specialized interest in pediatrics and have demonstrated exceptional academic performance in maternal, child and family health nursing while exhibiting a caring and professional attitude. Awards are presented annually in memory of Dr. Carl G. Pierce, who served as a Beebe physician and taught at the Beebe School of Nursing for many years. This year’s winners are Reagan Hockenbrock and Destiny Klinger, senior student scholarship recipients.

The Irene P. Sorbara Charitable Foundation Scholarship awards are presented in memory of Irene P. Sorbara, an elementary school teacher in Rehoboth Beach for 30 years. They are awarded to Sussex County residents who are pursuing postsecondary education in nursing or education, have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher and may be eligible for student loans but not Pell Grants. This year’s awardees are Reagan Hockenbrock and Marisol Azar, senior student scholarship recipients; and Olivia Morales, Riley Osborne, Madison Barber, Lacy Bayley and Yana Quel, first-year student scholarship recipients.

The National Coalition of Hospital Associated Schools and Colleges of Nursing Scholarships are awarded to nursing students in recognition of academic achievement, involvement in school and professional organizations, and engagement in community-based projects and activities. Applicants must have completed their first year of nursing school in good academic standing and be enrolled in the RN or LPN-RN program. This year’s winner is Lillian Cook, senior student scholarship recipient.
