Bees borrow beach bench

Local beekeeper rounds up sand swarm
July 17, 2024

A swarm of honey bees created some buzz on Savannah Beach in Lewes July 17, taking over a bench in front of the parking lot.

Alison Kirk, city facilities foreman, said one of the city maintenance crew stumbled upon the bees on the morning trash pickup.

The bees were not A-list guests, so the city reached out to local experts for help in getting them evicted.

Kirk said Donn Uhlhorn of the Delaware Beekeepers Association made a beeline for beach. She said he was there in 20 minutes, put on protective gear and went to work.

Uhlhorn was able to round up 99% of the swarm in a container and take them to a new home, according to Kirk. He gets a “A” for bees.

Kirk said Uhlhorn was confident the remaining bees would eventually make their way back to their hive.

Kirk said the city roped off a pair of benches until it was safe to sit and not get stung.

Kirk said anyone who sees a swarm of bees should reach out to the Delaware Beekeepers Association.
