Being White in a Multicultural Society is topic Sept. 14

September 8, 2021

The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice will host a virtual town hall meeting from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 14, on Being White in a Multicultural Society: The Conversation We Need. An interracial panel, co-moderated by Dr. Katherine Cauley and the Rev. Dania Griffin, will explore why white people should recognize and understand what being white means in this society and how it is perceived by others.

“Many of us in the predominantly white community often see race as something that other people have,” said Don Peterson, co-vice chair of the SDARJ Steering Committee. “During this very interactive discussion, we hope to highlight the fact that being white is a racial and social construct with specific meaning, benefits and consequences.”

Moderator Katherine Cauley was the director of the Center for Healthy Communities and professor of psychology at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. The Rev. Dania Griffin, pastor of Antioch AME Church in Frankford, has served as Kent County coordinator for the Juvenile Awareness Education Project and director of Upward Bound at Delaware State University. Participating panelists are Marcel Hayes, Aaron Latta-Moore, Jalyn Powell, Allan Slan, Hope Vella and Michele Warch.

SDARJ encourages viewing the TEDx talk, "How Can I Have a Positive Racial Identity? I'm White!" by Ali Michael (youtube.com/watch?v=hxXMf5K1W6E) before the town hall meeting. To register for the Sept. 14 meeting, go to conversationsweneed.eventbrite.com or for more information, go to sdarj.org.
