Benefit for Dewey fire victims set for May 4

Officer Jack Kane, who saved residents from burning homes, to be honored

A benefit for musician Chris Diller and other victims of the multiple-house fire that spread through Bayard and Swedes streets in Dewey Beach in April is set for 7 to 11 p.m., Wednesday, May 4, at the Rusty Rudder.

Dewey Beach Police Officer Jack Kane, who discovered the fire and saved residents and a dog from the blaze, will be honored at the event. Other than a minor burn Kane sustained to his hand during rescue efforts, no injuries were reported. 

The fire began in the early morning hours of April 16 at 1902 Bayard Ave. and quickly spread to 124 and 122 Swedes St. Assistant State Fire Marshal Michael Chionchio estimated the fire damage will exceed $1 million.

The fire remains under investigation at this time, Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal John Galaska said April 28; Chionichio said a cause for the blaze has not been determined. 

Entertainment will be donated by artists Laura Lea, Rick Arzt, JJ Rupp Band, Ginger Trio, Chris Diller and Clark Cummins. Tickets cost $20, and 100 percent of door, liquor and food receipts will go to the victims, said Highway One President Alex Pires.
