Bibliotherapy course starts Jan. 9 at HealTree
HealTree will present Presence, Recognizing the Divine in Your Everyday Life, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Tuesdays, Jan. 9 to Feb. 6, at 1632 Savannah Road, Suite 10, Lewes.
The facilitator will be Mary G. Jackson, pastoral counselor and author of a book of the same name.
Bibliotherapy utilizes literature to help people improve their lives by providing information, support and guidance in the form of reading books. Therapeutic book clubs improve communication skills, and increase deeper conversation and connections among members. Participants also have an opportunity to give and receive feedback regarding their understanding of the book, which in turn deepens their understanding of themselves. Benefits of bibliotherapy include gaining personal insight and perspective, relieving stress, increasing confidence and boosting creativity.
Researchers in an MRI study conducted in 2016 found that reading a novel changes one’s brain in areas around language, and these changes last after the book has been read. Additional brain changes in the area of physical sensation and movement indicated that while reading books, participants' brains were able to imagine what it would be like to be the main character in the book, which boosts the ability to see different perspectives. In a 2009 study, researchers found that reading for just six minutes a day can significantly reduce stress levels.
In this five-session bibliotherapy book group, Jackson will offer participants in-depth discussions in a safe environment to support their personal healing journey. All are welcome.
Jackson is a licensed clinical professional counselor in private practice and a graduate of Loyola College of Maryland’s School of Pastoral Counseling. She has led an eclectic life spurred by her adventurous curiosity, and delights in her close and loving family, world travel and a search for meaning.
Cost is $175 per person for all five sessions.
