Bicyclist dies following crash near Bethany Beach

A 71-year-old bicyclist has died from his injuries following an Oct. 3 crash south of the Indian River Inlet bridge.

Joseph Jezyk of Hockessin was riding southbound in the shoulder of southbound Route 1, south of Beach Cove Square, at 10:47 a.m. when, for unknown reasons, he turned left across the right lane and into the left lane, said Sgt. India Sturgis of the Delaware State Police.

At the same time, she said, a Lexus driven by a 62-year-old Ocean View man was traveling in the left lane. The front of the bicycle struck the right front of the Lexus, and Jezyk, who was wearing a helmet, was ejected. He was flown to an area hospital where he was admitted with injuries, Sturgis said, but he died Oct. 5 from his injuries.

The roadway was closed for more than two hours.
