Biden headed to the beach this weekend

Since taking office, this weekend will make three times president has visited beach home mid-April
April 11, 2024

President Joe Biden is expected to spend this coming weekend at his home in North Shores, about a mile north of Rehoboth Beach.

This will be the third time in 2024 that Biden has been in the area for a long weekend and the third time since being elected president that he’s visited his beach house around this time in mid-April – he also came in 2021 and 2023.

According to the White House Week Ahead Guidance and Press Schedule issued April 7, the president will be arriving in the area Friday, April 12, and returning Sunday, April 14, to the White House.

As of press deadline April 11, the White House hasn’t said what the specifics are for Biden’s arrival or departure. However, in advance of his arrival, the Federal Aviation Administration issued a restricted flight area notice April 10 that goes into effect at 6 p.m., Friday, April 12, and ends at 11 a.m., Monday, April 15.

Here’s a list of security measures taken when Biden is in town:

  • Gordons Pond users could see restrictions. The park’s parking lot is just around the corner from Biden’s home and is used as a landing site for Marine One.
  • If Biden decides to drive, motorists on Route 1 should be prepared for delays. By road, there’s really only one way to his house – southbound on Route 1, then through Rehoboth Beach. As the presidential motorcade makes its way south, police and state personnel sit at all intersections blocking traffic.
  • The FAA’s temporary flight restrictions limit use of the airspace – including drones – from Dover south to Ocean City, Md., and west to the Maryland border.
  • The Coast Guard establishes security zones in the ocean area immediately in front of North Shores beach and in the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal.

Biden typically doesn’t do too much when he’s in town for these long weekends – a bike ride on the Gordons Pond Trail, a walk on the beach, mass at St. Edmond Catholic Church. However, the president and first lady Dr. Jill Biden do get out – during their last visit, they ate at Henlopen City Oyster House, and at other times, they’ve eaten at Egg in Rehoboth Beach twice, and had a meal at Matt’s Fish Camp outside Lewes before seeing a movie at Movies at Midway.
