Big Wheel Race ready to roll at Starboard July 28

The 10th Annual Big Wheel Race will begin at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 28, at the Starboard. A long-held tradition that raises money for Dewey Goes Pink, the Big Wheel Race is a lighthearted event that allows participants to unleash their silly sides while making serious money for the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition.

Raising money and awareness for breast cancer is an issue near and dear to Steve “Monty” Montgomery, owner of the Starboard, whose mother battled the disease. Anytime he gets a chance to host an event that brings to light the issues surrounding breast cancer, he’s always game. “The Big Wheel Race is great, because this is the precursor to the Dewey Goes Pink weekend, and it’s also a fun time,” said Montgomery.

This year’s event has a mermaid theme, making for fun costuming options as well as Big Wheel decoration inspiration. Those participating are encouraged to go over the top with the mermaid theme, in both their personal garb and their bike decorations.

Race organizer Suzy Casey said, “It’s a quirky sort of fundraiser, like the Starboard is known for, but beyond that, it’s about raising awareness in a way that is joyful.” To see all the people dressed in pink with their bikes decked out in full regalia, one can’t help but smile.

A $20 donation covers a spot in the race as well as a T-shirt.

Spectating is encouraged, and is also free, and lots of T-shirts and other swag are available for purchase. The day includes an obstacle course race, drag race, mermaid costume contest and wagon pull. There is a also a contest for Best Decked Big Wheel, as well as an auction and face painting.

New this year is a decoration station where people can ornament some big wheels, which are provided on a first-come, first-served basis. In keeping with this year’s theme, there will also be some mermaid games.

All proceeds go to Dewey Goes Pink, which donates to the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, putting those dollars to work right here in Delaware.

Registration for the day begins at 1 p.m. The event is fun for the whole family, and brings a dose of joy that will have attendees grinning from ear to ear.
