A fire siren sounded at 8:58 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 3.
It gave me pause.
I thought about how someone’s life might be altered completely as a result of that sound, perhaps tragically. I prayed for a positive outcome of that unknown.
I considered that some thought that noise a nuisance, an interruption to their daily routine. How sad. Rather, it is a call to arms for first responders who leave the warmth of their homes and the fellowship of their families to venture into the cold darkness, too often in harm’s way, to offer a helping hand to a stranger in need. How gallant!
I mulled the possibilities that the night would bring to all of those involved while I calmly and peacefully made preparations for bedtime in my home. I prayed again.
I remembered the recent flyer I received from the Lewes Fire Department asking for a donation, regardless of how small, so its members could continue to go where too few others wanted to go, at times too many others felt inconvenient, to participate in activity so necessary for our community. How many people would give?
A fire siren sounded at 8:58 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 3, and it changed my life.
