Two days before the 2-year anniversary of his younger sister's death, Georgia resident Brett Bramble stood on the beach at Cape Henlopen State Park and prepared for a cross-country journey.
Bramble began walking west March 13, in hopes of raising awareness about drug overdoses. At 28, his sister Brittany died of a heroin overdose, and since then, he has been raising awareness about the high rate of drug overdoses across the country.
In Lewes, Bramble was surrounded by family, friends and local supporters before beginning his 8-month journey to San Francisco. With his dog Domino by his side, he began his walk in the rain and traveled about 16 miles on his first day.
Bramble crossed into Maryland March 15 and has been blogging about his journey and the help he has received along the way. To follow his trek or to offer support, go to brettbramblewalks.com.
