The Bridge FM launches Christian radio station in Sussex County

December 24, 2010

WKNZ-FM officially signed on the air Dec. 7. The Christian-based radio station will be better known as The Bridge, a name that was selected to emphasize the broadcasting medium’s goal of connecting people all throughout Delmarva with its menu of news, information, music, events and more.

More information on WKNZ can be obtained by calling the station at 302-422-6909.

“There is no central media voice in Delaware that serves the Christian community. We want to be that voice,” said Bill Sammons, owner of Milford-based Watermark Productions and station manager for the new WKNZ-FM. “This is something we’ve been working toward for a long time.”

The Bridge is licensed in Harrington and will cover most of the First State, plus the Eastern Shore of Maryland and southern New Jersey with its 25,000-watt transmitter.

The station is located at 88.7 on the radio dial and is required to be noncommercial under Federal Communications Commission guidelines.

It must also be owned by a nonprofit organization, which in this case is Eagle’s Nest Fellowship Church of Milton. “Eagle’s Nest will hold the license, but we expect to be financially independent of the church and serve as a radio station supported by, and available to, everyone on Delmarva,” said Sammons, who will co-host the station’s morning show with Denise Harper of Milton. “This station is a voice for the Christian community, one we hope will be heard loud and clear for many years to come.”

Programming on WKNZ will be contemporary Christian music, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In addition to Sammons and Harper in the morning, former WGMD radio personality John Mixon, radio veteran Jake Summers and Angela Stevens will also serve as local hosts on the station.

The Bridge will be available soon online via a link on 887thebridge.com
.

Unlike most radio stations in the region, The Bridge is not permitted to air commercial advertisements. It is, however, permitted to thank individuals and businesses that provide financial support via underwriting.

The station will be financed through monthly and one-time financial gifts from listeners and others who support wholesome family entertainment and music.
