Brooms come out as Sussex Academy girls’ basketball secures sweep

Seahawks’ 42-30 win over Woodbridge moves team to 4-6 in Henlopen South
January 30, 2025

Jumping out to a 17-7 lead after the first quarter, the Sussex Academy girls’ basketball team used the fast start to wrap up a season sweep of Woodbridge with a 42-30 win Jan. 28.

“We were all just really hyped up for this game [because] we knew it was going to be a good one,” said senior Emiley Bisaha.

“This is a good win to get us going, especially after the last couple of losses,” said Seahawks coach Rayona Benson. “This was a good team win, where everybody just did their job and did their assignment.”

Grayce Glover showed off a new dimension to her game, a three-point shot, and scored seven of her team-high 16 points in the first quarter. Sophomore Capucine Duvert finished just behind her classmate with 14 points, scoring eight of them in the opening frame.

“I'm not really an outside shooter, but I've been working a lot on my three-point shots,” Glover said.

Up 23-18 heading into the half, Sussex Academy had the lead but was losing momentum, as Woodbridge trimmed the deficit in the third quarter to trail 29-28 heading into the final eight minutes. Earlier collapses lingered on the minds of the Seahawks, but it appeared they may have learned their lesson.

“We’ve got to come out with the same energy we came out for the first quarter, because if we are not jumping on them, that means they are jumping on us,” Benson said. “We got to be able to stop, and we got to be able to sustain it.”

Winning the fourth quarter 13-2, Sussex Academy rolled to a 42-30 win, putting them at 4-6 in the Henlopen South and 5-8 overall record.

“In the past, we haven't had super-great records, but we always try our best, and it feels great for it to finally pay off,” Bisaha said.

“Hopefully it sets the tone for the rest of the season, especially because we have a couple of home games coming up,” Benson said.

Sussex Academy will host Delmar at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 4, for Senior Night before welcoming Seaford at 4 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 6.
