Broomstick Derby Run to be held at The Starboard May 5
The Starboard Restaurant in Dewey Beach is known for taking events and turning them into zany celebrations. Now, from the people who bring The Running of the Bull comes a Kentucky Derby-themed event that will have participants mounting their own prize-winning horses in a race for the glory. Everyone needs to get their fancy hats ready, because The Starboard is hosting the inaugural Broomstick Horse Derby Run, sponsored by Maker's Mark, beginning at 4 p.m., Saturday, May 6.
Bob Rindfuss, state manager for Beam Suntory, talked about formulating the event in partnership with The Starboard. He said, "We wanted to bring horse racing to the public in a new, fun way. It's always a great time to get dressed up, so we are encouraging everyone to wear formal Kentucky Derby attire: seersucker, big hats, and bow ties."
This is a wild ride that can only happen at The Starboard, where the pre-party begins with Maker's Mark mint juleps. At 4 p.m., the broomstick horses will come out and jockeys can mount up for a high-tension race around the block. The Starboard is giving out some hefty prizes in the form of Starboard gift cards. The first-prize winner will snag a $500 gift card, second prize is a $250 gift card and third prize takes home a $100 gift card.
Giveaways include Starboard Derby Run Under Armour T-shirts and Starboard Derby Run rocks glasses dipped in Maker's Mark red wax. And when attendees come in and snag a $4 Maker's Mark mint julep, they will also get a commemorative Starboard Derby Run metal pint glass. All Maker's Mark drinks are only $4 the entire weekend as The Starboard kicks off another crazy future tradition.
Steve "Monty" Montgomery, owner of The Starboard, is excited to add the event to the annual roster. He said, "We're all about having a good time."
Following the big race, attendees can watch an even bigger race: the 143rd Running of the Kentucky Derby on any of The Starboard's 46 high-definition TVs. Later that evening, Kristen and The Noise will keep the party going beginning at 9:30 p.m. As always, The Starboard is providing this high-spirited event free of charge, and $4 Maker's Mark shots and drinks will be on special all weekend in honor of the derby run.
