Brr! It’s icicle season in the Cape Region

Nature’s frozen art result of frigid temps
January 13, 2025

It’s been over a week since nearly a foot of snow covered the Cape Region.

Typically, following a large snow, temperatures creep back up above freezing during the day and the thaw is on. Icicles are formed, but they don’t stand a chance to grow.

This time around, however, temperatures have mostly stayed at or below freezing. Icicles are taking advantage of growing season – there are some monstrous icicles forming off the eaves of houses, while others have encrusted plants and anything below.

The National Weather Service is calling for temperatures in the low 40s Jan. 13, but the rest of the week is expected to be in the 30s during the day and teens at night. Icicles that survive Jan. 13’s heat wave may be around for a while.

This is just a small collection of icicles in the area. If you know of a big icicle or one that’s a cool shape, send a photo to cflood@capegazette.com.
