Buena M. Kling, loved the water
Buena M. Kling, 88, of Georgetown, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 8, 2023. She was born March 24, 1935, in Lewes, daughter of the late Clarence E. and Buena E. (Riggin) Newcomb.
Born and raised in Lewes, Buena and the Newcomb family held a place in Delaware’s nautical history, her father Clarence being the first riverboat pilot in Lewes. Migrating north to Wilmington, Buena’s natural athletic ability blossomed. She held the record in the state of Delaware for the second-highest-scoring player in women’s high school basketball, graduating in 1953 from Wilmington High School. Her path led her to a career working in several poultry plants in Southern Delaware. Through hard work, she advanced to the position of quality-control supervisor and head grader, retiring after 20 years of dedicated service. Post-retirement, Buena worked for Hampton Inn and Sussex Family YMCA in Rehoboth Beach, where she met and made many friendships. She had a lifelong love of water like her father. She loved fishing, water-skiing, driving her speed boat, and when on dry land, she enjoyed bowling. Buena was a loving wife, sister, aunt, and friend, who will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, Buena was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph William Kling Jr.; brothers, Harold, Norman and Earl Newcomb; sisters, Ruth Hahn, Ethel Walker and Helen Lougheed. She is survived by her niece and special caregiver, Faye Wiles, who always called her Momma B. Buena also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, -nephews, great-great-nieces, -nephews, and great-great-great nieces and -nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 20, at Parsell Funeral Home & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Hwy., Lewes, where friends may call beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow the services at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Pilottown Road, Lewes.
