California man charged in Dewey assault with glass bottle
A California man faces assault charges after Dewey Beach police say he smashed a glass bottle on the head of another man Sept. 1.
Police said the assault happened at 2:27 p.m. on New Orleans Street when a Dewey Beach man, 38, was walking toward the beach when he was approached by three men. They conversed and the man continued walking when, police said, the men attacked him from behind using a glass bottle. The man was bleeding and had cuts on his face and scalp, police said. He was taken to Beebe Healthcare, where he was treated for his injuries and released.
While searching the area, Dewey police officers came upon a man who had fresh blood on his clothes, was covered in sand and matched the description of one of the men they were searching for. Police arrested Thomas Scarafone, 24, of San Diego, Calif., and charged him with felony second-degree assault, felony second-degree conspiracy, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, and disorderly conduct.
Scarafone was arraigned at Justice of the Peace 3 in Georgetown and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $56,000 cash bond.
