Cami Smith cracked the code with a pair of second-half goals in the final 16 minutes Oct. 23, leading Cape hockey to a 2-0 shutout victory over visiting Smyrna.
The Vikings dominated shots on goal 29-1 and corners 16-0. Smyrna goalie Katelynn Porter had 11 saves, while Marlee Geppert had one huge left-footed save in a scoreless game.
Amanda Sponaugle had the only assist on Smith’s second goal.
Cape improved to 11-1 on the season, with all wins coming by shutout. Smyrna dropped to 8-4-1 with games left at Lake Forest and Middletown.
“We have to win one of those to assure getting into the tournament,” said Smyrna coach Nicky Shirey.
“We may see them again,” cautioned Cape coach Kate Austin to her team after the game. “You know with that many shots and corners, we just have to score more goals. We’ve been preaching that all season.”
Senior Taylor Smith got the start at forward alongside her goal-scoring sister Cami.
“If Cami sees the ball rolling near the goal, just get out of her way,” Taylor said. “As for me, I work hard every day to earn my minutes. Cape is a great team to play for, and we have a lot of talent.”
“Our midfield is young and learned something in this game tonight,” said coach Shirey after the game. “Cape is so fast and gives up nothing easily. We are athletic and working to get to that level.”
Cape has an away game at Caesar Rodney scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 25, then will travel to unbeaten Padua on Saturday, Oct. 27. Cape closes the regular season Monday, Oct. 29, at Laurel.
Cape’s JV remained unbeaten with a 4-0 win over Smyrna on a pair of goals by Lily Ashby and single goals by Sommer Dorman and Tia Jarvis. Laci Dixion got the win in goal.
