Camp Abilities Delaware to offer adapted sport program Feb. 17-19
Over President’s Day weekend, local youth with visual impairments will participate in Camp Abilities Delaware, an adapted sport program, from Friday to Sunday, Feb. 17 to 19, at the University of Delaware’s Virden Center in Lewes.
Children with visual impairments often lack access to physical activity programs that meet their needs. Camp Abilities Delaware, in partnership with the Delaware Division of Public Health’s Physical Activity, Nutrition and Obesity Prevention Program, seeks to change that.
Camp Abilities Delaware is an educational sports camp for children ages 5-17 who are blind or have low vision. It offers an overnight camp experience that introduces children to a variety of sports, including cross-country running, orienteering, swimming, field events, golf, blind soccer, team building, lacrosse, beep baseball, rugby, football, goalball and dance.
The purpose of the camp is to empower children to be physically active, improve their overall health and wellness, encourage them to make food choices that support an active lifestyle, and develop their confidence and self-esteem through sport and physical activity.
Children receive one-on-one instruction from trained coaches during all physical activities and events. Camp Abilities Delaware also offers coach-in-training and junior coaching programs to develop leadership and allyship skills for youth ages 15-17 with and without visual impairments.
