Campbell earns Eagle Scout

January 23, 2025

Boy Scout Troop 1 of Lewes honored its latest Eagle Scout, Ian Campbell in a ceremony Jan. 18.

Ian, 14, is the son of Dean and Alaine Campbell of Milton and is a freshman at Delmarva Christian High School.

Ian first joined scouting at the age of 6 as a Tiger Scout and worked his way through Cub Scouts, earning all 27 activity pins in Webelos, then crossing over to Boy Scouts in May 2021. Since joining Boy Scouts, Ian has logged more than 172 hours of community service and 80 nights of camping. In addition to the frequent weekend camping, Ian also attended the Boy Scouts of America National Jamboree in 2023 and last summer participated in a week of training at National Youth Leadership Training.

Ian was officially recognized as Eagle Scout in October after he completed his Eagle Scout project during the summer of 2024 by planning and completing a paver patio and fire pit, complete with six polywood benches, at The Crossing, Church of Christ, near Milton. The new patio, fire pit and benches replaced a well-worn existing fire pit and wooden benches.

Ian’s reflection speech first recognized God and then the pastors at The Crossing.

Ian’s ceremony was designed to not only commemorate his achievement but also to honor those close to him who had helped him along the way.

Ian was sworn in by his fellow Eagle Scout and friend, Ryan Stulmuller, while standing with his Eagle Scout brothers, David Campbell and Steven Matalavage. The ceremonial campaign hat was awarded by his mentor and former scoutmaster, John Murray. Ian also recognized and awarded a mentor pin to his former Cub Scout den leader, now Boy Scout leader, John Biddle.

Ian’s selected guest speaker was Drew Jensen, principal of Delmarva Christian School Milton Campus, himself an Eagle Scout.

Ian’s ceremony concluded with tributes from the Delaware State Senate by Sen. Russ Huxtable, D-Lewes, Gov. John Carney and Sussex County Council, and presentation of congratulatory letters from U.S. Sens. Chris Coons and Lisa Blunt Rochester.

Ian plans to graduate high school and pursue a degree and career in architectural engineering.
