Cannonball Run: Always go on sound

109 runners circle Lewes in 12th annual event
September 18, 2015

You can outrun a cannonball, but like an Olympic sprinter, you have to go on sound. If you see an incoming lead ball, just hope it misses.

The 12th annual Cannonball Run in downtown Lewes was held Sept. 13 starting at the intersection of Second and Shipcarpenter streets in front of the Lewes Historical Society complex, hanging a right on Mulberry then right again out toward the College of Earth, Ocean and Environment.

Steven Eshelman, 22, of Lincoln led 109 runners to the finish line in 17:40. He was followed by Martin Rodriguez in 18:20, James Maio in 19:32, Dan Ubilla in 21:22, Mike Fraundorfer in 21:23, Charles Franklin in 21:39, first woman Susan Dunn in 21:40, Helen Morrow in 21:46, Joe Link in 21:54 and Wade Buckland in 22:02.

Brexton Carter, just 10 years old, continues his summer of fast running, clocking a 22:06. Evan Snyder, 10, was close behind in 23:09. Aiden Bowman, 11, ran 24:55.

Kevin Smith, 66, former Joe Biden aide (“I know nothing”) clocked 27:13.

Bill MacArthur, 75, a former math professor at Shippensburg, ran 29:35. Bill races and kayaks and does open-water swim races. Fifty years ago, a 75-year-old athlete doing all that stuff would have been described in a single word, “crazy."

Frosty McDaniel, 71, ran 47:19 and wins the best name in the race award.

Mayor Ted Becker circled the 5K in 44:52.

The next Seashore Striders event is the Saturday, Sept. 26 East Coast Garden Center Corn to Run, starting at 9 a.m. on Cordrey Road in Millsboro.
