The Cape Henlopen baseball squad took the trip to Caravel Academy April 8 for a rematch to last season's DIAA state tournament semifinal matchup won by Cape 8-7. The game lived up to the hype, as a pitching battle ensued between Cape's David Erickson and Caravel's Joseph Silan.
"David had a phenomenal showing on the mound," said Cape head coach Ben Evick. "He was very polished. His changeup was good, his curve was good and his fastball was great."
With the strong pitching dual, each team had to take what they could get.
"They made good plays and we made good plays," said Evick. "All in all it was a good, hard-fought game."
Cape senior rightfielder Drew Mulcahy drove in Ben Ashby in the seventh inning to tie the game at 1-1 in the first night game for the Vikings in recent regular season history.
The elation didn't last long, as the Bucs' Kevin Keister walked to start the bottom of the seventh. He was moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Troy Marenco. He was then hit home by Roger Smith to give the Bucs the victory.
David Erickson took the loss for the Vikings after a splendid six-inning performance, striking out six and only allowing one earned run on two hits. He had to be pulled in the seventh due to the new pitch count rules.
Zack Gelof came in to pitch the seventh with one runner on base.
"Zack did a great job coming into that tough spot in the game," Evick said. "Caravel sacrificed their runner to second, which Zack made a great play on. Then they got the hit up the middle, where Austin [Elliott] nearly got the runner at home. I hope we see them in the future this season."
The Vikings move to 3-1 on the season.
