The Cape baseball team’s rally came up short April 26, as they dropped from the undefeated ranks with a 14-10 loss to Salesianum at Chris Short Field.
Sallies jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Cape responded with two in the bottom half of the inning. Sallies scored three more runs over the next two innings to take an 11-2 lead after three. But Cape battled back with two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, four in the sixth and one in the seventh. Sallies held on, though, scoring one in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Emmett Wheatley and Jaxon Clampitt each had two hits; Clampitt picked up an RBI. Liam Mitchell had two hits and knocked in three runs. Jase Mitchell delivered two RBIs. Trey Hitchcock slammed a homer. Malachi Woods and Brad Marks each knocked in a run.
Jase Mitchell, Brady Kosc and Liam Mitchell each had a stolen base.
Marks toed the rubber for the Vikings, later relieved by Jacob Smith. Each struck out one batter. Jack Simeone came in from the bullpen and struck out seven.
“It was one of those days in baseball where everything Sallies hit found a way to fall,” said Cape coach Ben Evick. “We made some good pitches, and they made contact and got hits. We spotted them eight runs in the first inning, but we battled and made it a game. We showed we have fight no matter the circumstances. We made a few defensive errors, which is out of character for who we have been, but we also made a few very good plays. With seven games left in the regular season, we will work hard to improve before we get to the postseason.”
The Vikings are 11-1, while Sallies moves to 9-2.
Cape plays host to Sussex Central Tuesday, April 29.
