February 14, 2022

No. 2 Cape traveled to No. 1 Sanford Feb. 11 and came up short, as the Vikings fell 43-25. Cape moves to 13-4, while the Sanford squad is now 12-2. Sanford’s losses have come at the hands of out-of-state schools McDonogh School and Georgetown Visitation.

“Losses always show us what we need to work on,” said Cape coach Pat Woods. “The problems have been there, but they weren’t exposed until we faced a lot of resistance. We know that Friday wasn’t a playoff game. So we wanted to make sure we learned from it.”

Only three Cape players scored in the contest. Julia Saleur led the Vikings with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Mehkia Applewhite hit for eight points and eight rebounds. Morgan Mahoney scored seven points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Kelly Bragg pulled down seven rebounds.

“I think this loss will help us in a sense,” said Saleur. “We needed a game like this one to realize that the competition is way more than we thought, and that we need to be more aggressive and relentless. We can’t be scared. We need to be able to face these teams and execute as well as we do when we face other teams. Now we know what we need to work on and what we need to change in order to move forward and get ready for bigger games coming up.”

Amiya Carroll led the Warriors with 15 points. Azareya Kilgoe hit 11 points, while Jada Snow scored 10.

The Lady Vikings defeated Polytech 60-23 Feb. 10. Mahoney scored 18 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Applewhite tallied 16 points, six rebounds and four steals. Saleur added 12 points, five assists and five steals. Ella Rishko grabbed seven rebounds and made four steals.

Kallie Hopkins led the Panthers with 10 points.
