Fear not, basketball fans. Although Slam Dunk to the Beach has been canceled, the Cape High boys' basketball team will be hosting the inaugural Beach Slam Classic thanks to the booster club.
“I am trying to take advantage of that momentum and do our own event,” said Cape coach Steve Re about the end of the previous holiday tournament. “I have invited three other public schools, and we have been raising funds to host them overnight to play in the two-day tournament.”
The Vikings are slated to play the Wildcats of Mountain View High School from Stafford, Va., in a game set for Friday, Dec. 27. Two Maryland schools will square off as part of the two-game opening night when the Bruins from Broadneck High School in Annapolis battle the Oakland Mills Scorpions out of Columbia, Md.
The event’s consolation and championship games will be featured Saturday, Dec. 28.
All games played by the four teams will count toward each squad’s overall record.
“We hope to make it annual and maybe expand in the future,” Re said.
Currently, Cape and its boosters are raising funds to host the three schools overnight, and organizers say they do need help from the community.
