Cape boys’ basketball wins sloppy game over Polytech

Vikings lose energy in fourth quarter
February 15, 2024

The Cape boys’ basketball team moved to 10-9 on the season with a 57-47 home win over Polytech Feb. 13.

“We held them to 12 points in the first half, and came out in the third period and picked up the intensity a little bit,” said coach Steve Re. “Then the fourth quarter was not up to the standard we’ve set for ourselves these last few games. We’ve got to continue to remind ourselves to play with poise and within our structure. The fun stuff like [Jameson] Tingle’s alley-oop dunk are great, but as much as I like those plays, I like when we execute more.”

Three Vikings hit for double figures. Tingle led the Vikings with 15 points, five rebounds and five blocks. Senior Jack Schell tallied 11 points and snagged six rebounds. Kameron Trammell dropped 10 points.

Junior Jayden Dukes continued to play consistently on both ends of the hardwood, recording nine points, eight rebounds, six steals and four assists.

Oz Daisey added pressure to the opponents on defense.

“I know my role on this team, and I continue to try to bring the energy each game,” said Daisey. “When I come off the bench, I try to bring the energy [through] rebounding and pressure defense. Not scoring doesn’t affect me. Maybe next year I can add that to my game, but I just try to do anything I can for us to win.”

Manny Ortiz Villaman scored six and grabbed four rebounds.

“We’re trying to get ready for a playoff run,“ he said. “We try to bring intensity to each game, but we just can’t beat ourselves. I think in the fourth quarter we got a little too excited after Jameson’s dunk and a few guys wanted to get a highlight reel [moment]. We’ve got a few young guys that just got a little excited. We’ll fix what we need to do for the next game.”

The Vikings host Appoquinimink Wednesday, Feb. 21, when they will celebrate Senior Night.
