In an atmosphere where the cheering was so loud you couldn’t hear yourself think, a matchup of Northern Division swim rivals pitted the Cape and Caesar Rodney squads at the Central Delaware YMCA in Dover Dec. 20.
When the screaming subsided, the Vikings and Riders boys’ teams tied 85-85. The Caesar Rodney girls had pulled off a 91-79 victory.
The Vikings’ boys moved to a 4-0-1 record. The match showed how important second-, third- and fourth-place finishes are, as the Vikings won 8 of 11 races.
The medley relay team of Thomas Weeks, Josh Toback, Marcus Gromofsky and Dylan Kaplan took first in 1:49.62. Toback won the 200 individual medley in 2:07.28. Kaplan won the 50 freestyle at 23.50. Gromofsky placed first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:02.61. Weeks swam to a 5:24.20 first-place finish in the 500 free and a 1:00.31 finish in the 100 backstroke. Toback won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:08.52.
To secure the tie, the team of JP Heid, Gromofsky, Weeks and Toback won the 400 free relay with a time of 3:37.40.
“It was a tough meet,” Weeks said. “Both teams were missing some important swimmers, so we weren’t really sure how it was going to turn out. It came down to the final 400 relay, and we ended with a tie.”
The Cape girls took first in 3 of 11 events.
They started off strong with the team of Madelyn McGreevey, Aya Daisy, Amaya Daisey and Erin Morrisey winning the 200 medley relay in a time of 2:02.72. Aya Daisey took first in the 200 free in 2:07.16 and the 100 butterfly in 1:03.33.
“I thought that we swam some really good times, but we need to work on our intensity,” said Cape coach Bill Geppert. “CR always brings theirs to every athletic event. It was an intense meet that was determined by second, third, fourth and even fifth place – everything mattered. All of our kids need to work on finishing and out touching theirs for all the places. We got out-hustled tonight. Both teams were down swimmers due to vacation and illness, but they found a way. We need to bring our intensity to our tough meets coming up.”
The Vikings will host Sussex Central on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the Sussex Family YMCA.
