Cape boys' lacrosse blows out Saint Mark's 18-7
The Cape boys' lacrosse team jacked it up then shut it down April 23 at Legends Stadium, blowing out Saint Mark’s 18-7 and improving to 5-2 on the season. The win was the fourth in a row for Cape and came on the heels of a 6-5 win over Saint John's College High School from Washington, D.C. Cape’s only losses came from Maryland powers Severn School and Bullis Prep.
Saint Mark’s came into the windblown contest riding a four-game winning streak that included a 13-7 win over Caesar Rodney.
‘We wanted to make a statement early in the game to establish ourselves and let them know we are Cape and we are back," said senior Luke Benson, who had five goals in the contest.
“We’ve been playing alongside each other forever,” said Blake Mann, Benson’s senior teammate, who scored four goals in the game. “We all look for each other. Over half our goals are on assists.”
Cape raced out to an 11-2 halftime advantage and made it look easy before coasting home for the 18-7 victory. There wasn’t much of a storyline in the game; the Spartans simply got rocked.
“That’s the best and most complete game we’ve played this season," said head coach Jack Lingo, "The one-goal win over St. John’s helped our confidence and showed we’re a tough team that can win a close game. We have so many big ones coming up including at Queen Anne’s County on Monday [April 28] then home against Polytech on Wednesday night [April 30].
Cape is only halfway through the regular season schedule and still has Caesar Rodney, Tower Hill and Salesianum to deal with before reaching the post-season state tournament.
“We know if we can score we’ve got Grant [Gillan] in goal and two state champion wrestlers, Tommy [Ott] and Aaron [Mattioni] with long poles in front of him,“ said Benson. ‘We like our chances against whoever we play.”
Along with Benson's five goals and Mann's four, Todd Keen, Jeb Monigle and Michael Hopkins each had two. Single goals from came from Justin Lopez and Kyle Orton.
Spartans goals were scored by Rhett Schweizer, Brandon Papa, Jackson Monro, James Magnani, Austin Shakespeare and Dalton Ziemba.
The Vikings outshot the Spartans 33-26 .
Gillan had 9 saves for the Vikings, while Alex Manges was credited with 7 for the Spartans.
