Cape community comes together

July 26, 2024

The untimely deaths of two Cape Henlopen High School students last week sent shock waves through the Cape Region.

As people woke up July 16, they learned Elijah Ghabour and Ryan Andrew had lost their lives in a tragic car accident on Gills Neck Road, just a mile from the high school where they made friends, played sports and spent a lot of time.

The community immediately came together to grieve the losses. Girls participating at a field hockey camp on the Cape campus gathered in the gym with members of the football and lacrosse teams and others. They tried to work it all out together.

Members of the community, some with no connection to the high school at all, changed their social media profile pictures to the image of two hearts – one Columbia blue, the other gold – to honor the lives of Elijah and Ryan. Many local businesses followed suit, showing how this community comes together when tragedy strikes, just like it always has.

The Cape community’s response exemplifies the profound empathy and solidarity that define this close-knit region.

What stands out most in this display of compassion is the genuine care and unity that characterize the Cape community. In a world often characterized by division, this community has shown that in moments of tragedy, we are bound together by our humanity and our capacity to uplift one another. The Andrew and Ghabour families have not walked alone through their grief; they have been surrounded by a community that understands the power of solidarity and collective support.

Our community has demonstrated this time and time again. It’s one of the many things that makes the Cape Region one of the greatest places to live in the world.

So as the boys are laid to rest, the community will continue to wrap their collective arms around the Andrew and Ghabour families while they navigate this difficult time. The community will also ensure Elijah and Ryan are never forgotten.
