The Cape boys won three meets in one race Sept. 27 at Polytech, lowballing Sussex Tech 28-29, Polytech 24-33 and Milford 15-49.
A hundred runners are sorted out at the finish line, with each school’s top 7 runners counted toward the team score.
Ryan Murrow of the Ravens, back from a hip band injury, was the overall winner in 17:51. The course was boggy and slow, with lots of turns and changing terrain, and one menacing fire hydrant in the middle of a field.
Focusing on the one-point team head-to-head race, Cape versus Sussex Tech, Murrow was followed by John Destefano of Cape in 18:05, Kury Rushing of Sussex Tech in 18:09, Kolbe O’Donnell of Cape in 18:11, Caleb Bradley of Sussex Tech in 18:26, Owen Allen of Cape in 18:39, Tristan Holland of Cape in 18:54, David Geyer of Sussex Tech in 18:55, Daniel Adili-Khams of Cape in 18:58, James Wisely of Cape in 19:00, Brian Sponaugle of Cape in 19:28 and Colin Kay of Sussex Tech in 20:29.
“The meet was won with our fourth runner Tristan Holland, who held off Sussex Tech No. 4 [David Geyer] by a single second,” said Cape coach Matt Lindell after the race.
“I felt strong coming down to the finish line,” Holland said. “We raced the entire course. I started to sprint with about 200 meters to go.”
Jacob Stafford of Polytech was third overall in 18:08 followed by teammates Michael Rodriguez in 18:33 and Andrew Garza in 18:46.
Milford’s top runners were Moses Martinez in 19:08, Greg Auguste in 19:29, Dale Osterman in 19:32 and Conor Sylvester in 19:38.
Other head-to-head team matchups were Polytech over Milford 17-38; Sussex Tech over Polytech 26-30 and Sussex Tech over Milford 20-35.
Cape dominated the girls’ race, besting Sussex Tech 18-41, Milford 19-41 and Polytech 15-49.
Cape’s top 7 runners were Olivia Brozefsky in 20:55, Liz Melson in 21:13, Caroline Maull in 22:16, Amaya Daisey in 22:18, Mia Neubling in 22:22, Hadley Rhue in 22:37 and Erin Cannon in 25:01.
Alexandria Herber from Milford was second overall in a girls’ race of 45 runners with a time of 21:13. Other top 10 finishes excluding Cape were Hannah Murphy of Sussex Tech in 22:06, Kylie Millner of Sussex Tech in 22:06 and Gabby Cannon of Polytech in 22:57.
Other head-to-head team matchups were Milford over Polytech 23-32, Sussex Tech over Polytech 18-43 and Sussex Tech over Milford 22-36.
Cape hits the road for three straight invitationals, including the Charlie Bell Hornet Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 29, Tidewater Classic on Wednesday, Oct. 3, and Salesianum Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 6.
