Cape district holds fifth-grade science fair

The Cape Henlopen School District held its 3rd Annual Fifth-Grade Science Fair April 8 at the Rehoboth Beach Convention center. The 350 fifth-grade students competed for trophies in four categories with eight students receiving special awards. Shown with his first-place trophy in the Earth and Space Science category is Zane Rego Kessler from Rehoboth Elementary. With his project, Good for the Gulf, he discovered that human hair removes the most oil from water, better than cornmeal, oatmeal and cotton balls. BY STEVEN BILLUPS

In the life science category, Ryan Head from Rehoboth Elementary placed first for his project Get Out and Play or Stay in for the Day. Head discovered he had a higher heart rate from outdoor play compared to a lower rate from playing Wii video games. BY STEVEN BILLUPS
Clare Sullivan from Shields Elementary won first place in Consumer Products Science with her project The Big Pop. She discovered that she could blow the biggest bubble with Bazooka bubble gum. BY STEVEN BILLUPS
First place in the Physical Science category went to Lee-elle Abouboul from Rehoboth Elementary for her Invincible Bubbles project. Glycerin and water produced the longest lasting bubble compared to the corn syrup or soda solutions. BY STEVEN BILLUPS

Earth and Space Science

Good for the Gulf by Zane Rego Kesler of Rehoboth Elementary, first place; Fluorescent Flowers/Fact or Fiction? by Toni DeBastiani  of Milton Elementary, second place; Crystals by Jose Rios of HO Brittingham Elementary, third place.

Life Science

Get Out and Play or Stay in for the Day by Ryan Head of Rehoboth Elementary, first place; Video Games by Zach Gelof  of Rehoboth Elementary, second place; What Effects do Earthworms have on Plant Growth? By Kyile Clark of Milton Elementary, third place; Which Treats do Dogs Prefer? by Caitlyn Lewis of Milton Elementary, honorable mention.

Physical Science

Invincible Bubbles by Lee-elle Aboutboul of Rehoboth Elementary, first place; Slip, Sliding Away by Randy Rickards of Milton Elementary, second place; Wrath of the Onion by Megha Patel of Rehoboth Elementary, third place; Nuts for Energy by Mia Meacci of Rehoboth Elementary, honorable mention; The Bubble Effects by Shantraille Horsey of HO Brittingham Elementary, honorable mention.

Consumer Product Science

The Big Pop by Clare Sullivan of  Shields Elementary, first place; Which Fruit is the Juiciest? by Claire Lokken of Shields Elementary, second place; Let the Battle Begin by Cassidy Best of Shields Elementary, third place; Can You Handle the Heat? by Jakyla Dunning of Shields Elementary, honorable mention.

Madame CJ Walker Award – Feathers & Oil by Olivia Winberry of Rehoboth Elementary.

Sir Isaac Newton Award – How High Rockets Will Fly by Ben Campagnone of Shields Elementary

Sally Ride Award – Flight of the Paper Airplane by Keegan Hunsicker of Milton Elementary.
