Cape district thanks community champions

The Wheelhouse and Southern Delaware Therapeutic Riding were named Cape Community Champions at the Cape Henlopen school board meeting Jan. 26.
Board member Jason Bradley said 15 Sussex Consortium students participate in Southern Delaware Therapeutic Riding, where they ride twice a week on a rotating schedule.
In addition to riding, students groom horses, provide foot care, muck stalls and pastures, move hay bales and clean tack, Bradley said. Horses are in tune with nonverbal cues, Bradley said, which can help those with mental health, and physical and emotional issues.
The Cape High Functional Special Education Program has partnered with The Wheelhouse for eight years. Bradley said students who work at the restaurant wash and dry dishes, refill ice bins, help prepare food and enjoy a free meal after their shifts, Bradley said, thanking executive chef Dave Sauers and owners Anthony and Chris Jacona, who were unable to attend the meeting.
