Cape football to host Salesianum on Thursday night

A good Cape team is facing a brutal schedule
August 30, 2021

The Cape football team closed out the two-a-day preseason characterized by torridly hot weather last Friday at 5 p.m scrimmaging the Odessa Ducks and Conrad Red Wolves.

Cape pretty much was who they thought they were, rolling over both opponents inside the tackles, characterized by two Jordan Baines breakaways and long TD runs from Maurki James and Chancler Johnson.

Cape quarterbacks Hank D’Ambrogi, Keishawn Mansfield and C.J. Bruiton were listed as out for the scrimmage, so all the snaps were taken by junior signal caller Joe Coveleski.

“Joe did a good job for us,” said coach J.D. Maull.

Cape will open the regular season at home Thursday, Sept. 2, versus Salesianum.

Cape has 60 players in the program, while Sallies’ numbers are 150, including their freshman team.

“You can only play 11 is what I tell our kids,” Maull said. “We are big and experienced up front, and I’m sure we can hang with their line play. A lot of winning in football is about believing in yourself.”

Former Cape coach Rob Schroeder, the offensive coordinator for the 1979 state championship team and head coach of the 1984 state finalist squad, often said, “The good Cape teams hang with you with a bunch of athletes and win games by playmakers making big plays.”

“This is a good Cape team facing a brutal schedule, but we don’t have depth, so we can’t afford to get anyone hurt,” said Maull. “We’ll find out who we are Thursday night.”
