Cape football traveled to Easton High in Easton, Md., Friday night for a live scrimmage versus Patapsco followed by Crossland and closing out with host Easton.
The format was live except for a quick whistle on the quarterback. There were two simultaneous scrimmages on the field with each team getting the ball on the 40-yard line of the defense.
Cape ran 20 offensive plays and played defense for 20 against each team, for a total of 120 reps during the scrimmage.
“The coaches made sure the second line guys got plenty of plays,” coach Mike Frederick said. “We want to play well and see how our players respond to live football, but we’re not trying to win scrimmages.”
Jameson Tingle, Cape freshman quarterback, threw a touchdown to Lucas Stevenson on a post/corner route the first time he threw the football against Patapsco.
Tingle’s last pass of the day versus Easton was also a touchdown, and there were a few in between.
Maurki James was beastly at running back and was used sparingly. Seven different wide receivers caught passes in the scrimmage.
Frederick said, “Heading into final scrimmage, the attention turns to situational football. The things we haven’t gotten to quite yet, such as 2-minute and 4-minute offense. Defensive adjustments against unusual formations and situations like those. Firm up all special team installation. This is the last chance for a handful of our players to earn varsity time on these units or as essential depth on Friday nights. The staff thinks we have a good handle on personnel at this point for most positions. So look for those players on the rise to get the majority of the playing time.”
He added, “Happy with the development of both young QBs, Jameson Tingle and Mikey Thompson. I’ve been around this amazing game long enough to know you don’t have a chance without two terrific players at the position. And there will be days they won’t be at their best; that comes with the development process.”
Cape will scrimmage Appoquinimink at 6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 24, at Legends Stadium.
