The Cape Gazette travels to Crazy Horse Memorial

February 12, 2025

Bob and Mary Roche visited the Crazy Horse Memorial on their recent visit to the Black Hills of South Dakota. Crazy Horse was a respected, courageous, natural-born leader of the Oglala Lakota Tribe. Henry Standing Bear commissioned sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski to carve a likeness of Crazy Horse into the mountain as a tribute to all Indigenous peoples of North America. Blasting began in 1948 and continues today. When completed, it will depict Crazy Horse riding his horse and pointing to his tribal land. The memorial also houses The Indian Museum of North America and The Indian University of North America. The Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation is a nonprofit organization that does not depend on federal or state funding.
